West African Examinations Council
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board aided by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries, with aim to conduct the examination and to award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities abroad. Founded in 1952, the council has done well to contribute to education in Anglophone countries of West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia), with number of examinations they have coordinated, and certificates issued. They also formed an endowment fund, to aid education in West Africa, through lectures, and aid those who doesn’t have enough for education. Since established it has continued and still continues to be one of the biggest and most globally accepted and recognized exams in West Africa.
